Photoshop Follies: She Came from the Deep
If those prices aren’t scary, then you have another reason to be terrified!

She may be on that Angelina Jolie diet from the Oscars.
Thanks to my friend Shazia for the find!

Photoshop Follies: Sports Illustrated and the Kate Upton Cover
First, it was the issue with the recent Alex Morgan spread, now we have Kate Upton for the sports illustrated cover.
Can you see it? Something doesn’t look right but you don’t quite know what it is.
Let me give you a hint, it’s not her body.
Yup! They sloppily plopped her face from another shot on her body and it’s way off.
Remember, know your anatomy, it’s very important.
There are also accusations now surfacing that her body has also been borrowed from another model, or highly modified as well, but that’s another discussion.
Shh, no one’s going to tell!
The left arm also doesn’t have an armpit. But fair enough, I know most people probably won’t notice these things, but they are surely fun to look at.
There’s also another feature with something just as bad. Check it out here. This may be a result of cutting costs for post processing, tight deadlines, and little regard to asking if the shots line up. I really want to know what may have happened too.
Looking at the spread itself, they are much better and standard to what you would expect.
Here’s the full cover:

Here is her behind the scenes interview for the cover.

Photoshop Disaster: Sports Illustrated - Alex Morgan

This was a huge job, the Sports Illustrated spread for Alex Morgan with the body painted swimsuit. I was browsing a local forum when I came across these.

Usually the typical response from non-industry people is on Alex, but the retouching was so bad that it became the central focus of the entire topic even over her! So I had to do a feature on it.

Everything else was just fine - the photographer did a great job, Alex is beautiful as ever, and the body painter did a good job. ‘The fail’ is the actual skin work. And I’ve been asked to elaborate. Basically, the skin work is really bad. Not only is there an insane amount of blurring, but she is overly saturated as well. But most people see it right away.

You know it’s bad when a bunch of guys stop talking about a woman and talk about how bad the retouching was!

Maybe it was the day after the superbowl and he called in sick?

Laredoute had a huge slipup.
This French fashion chain published an image to their site that had everyone in an uproar. As you can see, in the foreground there are kids playing around having a good time, clearly advertising the clothing in an environment they deemed suitable.
But wait a minute, there’s a naked guy in the background.
The photographer missed it, the editors missed it, the retoucher missed it.
Maybe it was foreshadowing. Buy our expensive clothing for your kids and you won’t have enough for yourself!
Ever since then, this ad was pulled down along with an apology from the brand. However, you wonder, was this intentional?
Thank you to Albert Manduca for sending this in to us!

Photoshop Disaster: VOGUE
Yes, not even Vogue is immune to the dreaded Photoshop Disaster.
Break a leg, not cut it off! Does anyone even care anymore? I give up.
This season comes in with a new trend in the modeling industry. Anorexia is so not in, amputation is where it’s at!
And another one in the series.

I love the warped foot.
Aside from utterly horrible liquifying, there are other issues. It must be reminiscent of Dali, if Dali used HDR and kept the halos in the image. Perhaps it may be a high pass halo, where you put the high pass filter way too high. Either way, these halos are not the heavenly kind.
I could go on all day, it’s almost as exciting as a game of where’s waldo, if there were 10 of them in the image.
Dali - for those of you who are not familiar with the name:

Vogue, I know times are hard, but you need me on staff to overview that issues like these never make it past the first draft, let alone into the final.
But in all seriousness, aside from the joking around, I would really like to know what happened behind the scenes. I am fully aware of the insanity level deadlines that editorial work faces on the retouching side (can you say 9 images in 12 hours?), so there’s usually an explanation for this. Although, probably not a good one, but there is one never the less.
Though don’t get me wrong, this is not excusable and there needs to be tighter measures that things like this never happens. Is it an indirect sign of our economy and the lack of staff? Who knows.
I’m passionate about Vogue, because one day I would want to work for them and I believe their name is pristine with the standards they uphold. I would want to be held accountable and to the same standard when I work for them.
In the end, this should not happen.

“Wherfore Art Thou, Hips?” - Photoshop Follies
It appears this Bloomingdale’s model can’t be a hipster because her hips are missing.
That was the worst joke, possibly ever.
When you’re going through 100’s of images, sometimes you lose track of everything but the clothes when you’re focusing on just clothing. I have a feeling this was a ‘5 p.m. can’t wait to get out of here after I’m done with this’ image. So it may literally be the retoucher’s ‘fault’ but catalog work sucks sometimes.
I can almost see the notes on the before shot. “We’re going to liquify this one and make a nice curve under her arm down to ends of the dress to make a nice flair”.

Photoshop Disaster: Cosmopolitan Middle East Brittney Spears
I love how her left arm just fuses into her body.
First, it was the emergence of celebrities gracing the covers of fashion magazines, and now it’s a lack of care to what they put on the covers.
To be fair, it may be a mix of too many people putting their hands in the pot in terms of what they want done to the image. The more people involved, the worse it ends up. From the editor, art director, photographer, and retoucher, there are a lot of opinions and kickbacks. I just wish someone actually noticed that.
